As you are reading this you are likely to be in your office or working at a desk in your home. Take a moment to look around you. It’s probably the case that everything – and I am not exaggerating – everything that you can see, from the chair you are sitting on to the computer you are using to read this, either contains steel or was produced using a process that required steel. Steel is everywhere in our lives, and for good reason. It has built the modern world and will be equally indispensable to the world as it moves forward.
World Steel in Figures provides a fascinating snapshot of the dynamics of today’s steel industry, including everything from production and production processes, to demand, trade, safety, and more.
With the steel industry being responsible for between 7 and 9% of global CO2 emissions, the industry’s attention is currently focused on our environmental performance. Developing a global response to the ecological challenge is one of Worldsteel’s key focus areas, which I take the opportunity to highlight here. Our Sustainability Indicators collect data from our members all over the world to assess the industry’s current performance and measure our progress. CO2 emissions, as
well as the other issues measured by the indicators, fully commit the industry to reporting transparently to highlight the sustainable transition of steel production. I do hope that you find World Steel in the Figures and the details of our Sustainability Indicators of interest.
